Idukki -Best places to Visit

Idukki is the one of the most nature rich areas of kerala.  Idukki is the second largest District of Kerala and has an area of 4,358 km 2 (1,683 sq mi) but lowest n population density.  The Idukki district  is known for hydroelectric power plant and dams. The numerous river flow through these  area and the rich forest that are home to flora and fauna.

The famous attractions of Idukki district are tiger reserve of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park, Pampadum Shola National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary, Kattappana which is famous for its spices, Thommankuthu waterfalls, Cheeyappara waterfalls, Kalvari mount, Mangala Devi Temple, Hill view park, Pullumedu, Sahyadri Ayurvedic Centre, Peeru hills, Kulamav, Cheruthoni, Painav etc. Some of the important rivers of the idukki district are the Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar.

Idukki dam is the one of the Asia’s biggest arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills, 550 ft. high and 650 ft. wide. Kulamavu Dam and Cheruthoni Dam are the other  dams in Idukki. Idukki can be called the Power House of Kerala as it is the state’s Hydroelectric Power consumption.

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, natural habitat for several animals, spread across 70 sq. km and located about 450-750 m above sea level.The sanctuary has a reservoir formed by Cheruthoni dam, Idukki dam and Kulamav dam. The sanctuary is situated adjacent to the world famous Idukki Arch Dam. The sanctuary is home for Elephants, bison, sambar deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar, woodpecker, kingfisher,  jungle fowl, myna etc.

The Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is considered as the most protected area for the elephants and the tigers, lying over an area of 925 Sq .km.Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India.

Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai National Park) is situated in the high ranges of Idukki district of Kerala. This is also the land of “Neelakurinji”, a flower that blooms once in twelve years. Earlier Eravikulam National Park was a hunting preserve for  the British planters and later the area was declared as sanctuary with an objective of protecting the indigenous population of Nilgiri Tahr (most endangered mountain goat).

Anamudi is one of the highest peak in South India which is located at Idukki district. Anamudi peak is situated at the southern region of the Eravikulam National Park, is being recognized as the home for endangered species of animals

like Nilgiri languors, leopards, tigers, and macaques. Lying at a peak of 2695 m, the Anamudi peak shelters many animals.

Thommankuthu waterfall is located at Thodupuzha thaluk in Idukki district. It is located approximately 18km from Thodupuzha. It is a seven step waterfall. Tourists visit Thommankuthu to experience forest trekking, rock climbing, nature walk, bathing, etc. This is an ideal place for adventure tourism in Idukki.

Hill view park is a natural garden located near Idukki Arch Dam, offering great views of the Cheruthoni and Idukki Dams. Its a popular tourist attraction in Idukki district. The park spread over a wide area of 8 acres of land. This park has a natural water body at the hill top and pedal boating facility is available here.

Kalvari Mount is a popular hill station retreat  for all the visitors. It is lying at a distance of 5 km from Idukki. Kalvari mount provides mesmerising views of the Idukki Reservoir as well as the two major tribal villages of the region. Its nearby to munnar hill station. This is a popular tourist hotspot as it is ideal for trekking and for picnics. If you are trekking to the hill, you can even spot elephants on your way.
