1.Vembanad Lake

The most popular places to visit in Alleppey is the Vembanad Lake where you can take a cruise with your family in one of the many houseboats which have roofs made of palm leaves and bamboo poles. The purpose of visiting Vembanad is to relax and relish some local cuisine.  The houseboats mostly come to have a cook on board who serves mouthwatering Kerala dishes.

Vembanad Lake, also known as Vembanad Kayal, it is one of the largest lakes in Kerala and one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes. People from around the world come here for a boat ride and to spoil themselves in the scenic beauty of the backwaters.

Vembanad Lake is located in the Kumarakom region of Kottayam city. Tourists visit this place especially to enjoy the snake boat race; one of the famous festivals of Kumarakom. The place is also enjoyed as a picnic spot. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, located on the banks of Vembanad Lake on of the attractive palace. Also, on one end of the beach is the famous Alleppey lighthouse which was built during the 18th century.

Lake now converted into a lagoon, Kayamkulam lake has emerged into a hub for fishing, boat races, and tourism. The Alappuzha Mega Tourism Project offers a plethora of activities in the region. The famous Kayamkulam boat race is held in this lagoon. There’s nothing surprising if you happen to spot a stork or kingfisher swooping down to catch their daily fish.

It is located in Kayamkulam, Alappuzha district and spreads over the large area. This is one of the most scenic backwaters of Kerala and is located both in Alleppey and Quillon districts. It is the shallow lake which merges with the sea at Kayamkulam barrage.

This is really a stunning destination which you should visit at least once in your life. The spectacular view of the sunset really makes it worth visiting destination. This is so peaceful and capable of making your trip memorable and interesting much beyond your expectation.

The visitors can reach the Kayamkulam Lake easily through rail, road, and airways. The nearest railway station is the Kayamkulam railway station which is just about 8 KM from the lake. The Kayamkulam Lake can be visited in any season of the year but the best time to visit here is from November to March because of the calm and pleasant environment.

  1. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is home to a large number of avian species. The Kerala Tourism Development Commission has taken over the management of this sanctuary and has put up an interpretation center apart from a large resort right in the midst of it. Capture a few beauties on your camera and head to the resort to feast on local cuisine. Entry fee of INR 50/- (INR 100/- for foreign citizens) is per person.

Once you enter through the main gate, you will see the parking space and then the buildings that include a small coffee shop, offices, picture gallery, small hall etc.

There is a parking fee for all the vehicles parked on the premises. If you want to save some money, you may very well park outside the main gate. We chose to pay the parking fee and parked our car in the designated parking area.

   6.Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race at Punnamada Backwaters

Taking place in the month of August every year and a major competition leading into the Onam festival season, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an event not to be missed if you happen to visit during the latter half of the year. Teams of over 100 battle it out in a race while hollering out popular folk songs at the top of their voice.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is amongst the boat races in Kerala. It is held on the second Saturday of August every year. Location for the race is Punnamada Lake.
